Some houses built for Tsunami victims still not completed
By S.H. Mithrapala
After almost forty five months of the tsunami disaster, some affected families are still languishing in refugee camps and in half-completed houses without doors, windows electricity and sanitary facilities. Colossal amounts of foreign funds sent to various organisations have not benefited the needy affected families as some unscrupulous persons who handled most of the projects have used a good part of the foreign donations to increase their wealth.
The ten houses constructed at Tangalla, Lunumadawa on Nalagama road is a typical example of the substandard work done by the contractors due to obvious reasons. This housing project was commenced a few weeks after the December 26, 2004, tsunami by Rev. Ramesh Fernando of the Tangalla Methodist Church.
Only ten houses have been built and five of them have been given to five families. Most of the houses are without basic amenities. All ten houses lack water, electricity and those who have come into occupation have to walk about half a mile in search of drinking water. In some of the hitherto unoccupied houses doors, windows and door locks have been removed by unknown persons. Inside some of the unoccupied houses empty bottles of arrack and used family planning items had also been found.
