TMVP suspends aprc participation
The TMVP has decided to suspend its participation in the meetings of the All Party Representative Committee (APRC) scheduled for today and tomorrow as a mark of protest over the recent killing spree of civilians in the East.
TMVP General Secretary E. Kailesvararajah told the APRC in writing yesterday the security situation was deteriorating in the East.
He said his party had a responsibility as a democratic political entity to ensure the normalcy for the East before participating in evolving a political solution to the national question.
“We believe all the participants in the APRC sessions will understand our concerns and extend their solidarity to us,” he said.
Meanwhile, Eastern Province Chief Minister Sivanesathurai Chandrakanthan also said his party was not in a position to participate in the APRC meetings at this hour. Batticaloa Mayor Sivageetha Prabhakaran
was the TMVP representative to the APRC. The Chief Minister said that people were concerned whether his party had failed in its duty to establish normalcy in the province.
“We will suspend our participation only for this week. After that we will reconsider our decision depending on the situation,” he said.
During the last few weeks, a number of persons had been killed in the Eastern Province including some TMVP cadres.
However, APRC Chairman Science and Technology Minister Prof. Tissa Vitharana said he was still unaware of such a decision by the TMVP. Prof. Vitharana said his committee had completed 93 sessions so far.
The committee was appointed by the All Party Conference chaired by President Mahinda Rajapaksa in 2006 to evolve a political solution to the national question in consensus with all the political parties.
Later, the main Opposition UNP and JVP withdrew from the Committee, and they were yet to make representation to it. Besides, the TNA has never participated in the APRC deliberations.
Asked when the final report would be submitted, Prof. Vitharana replied that he was trying to work out it as soon as possible.
