LTTE’s last earth bund in safe -zone captured: Army
What was described as the LTTE’s last remaining earth bund in the south of Karayanmullivaikkal was captured yesterday morning after fierce fighting between the security forces and the LTTE, the military said.
The army headquarters said amid stiff LTTE resistance the troops of the 58-division blasted the last LTTE earth bund before capturing it.
“Several valiant soldiers sustained injuries in the fighting that broke out in the morning,” the army said without giving details of casualty figures.
The Defence Ministry said bodies of LTTE cadres killed during the confrontation were scattered ahead of the defence line while troops found three bodies of LTTE cadres by Wednesday evening. Two T-56 weapons and one I-Com radio set were also found in the clearing operation.
The Ministry said the LTTE was desperately trying to stop the advancing troops by launching indiscriminate attacks with its heavy weapons from the No Fire Zone.
Meanwhile, clashes were continuing in Vellamullivaikkal where the advancing troops met LTTE resistance. During search operations the troops recovered bodies of three LTTE cadres, two T-56 weapons and one communication set from the area.
