Tsunami victims will be resettled in their homes – Dinesh

The Government will soon build houses and resettle tsunami victim families of the North and East, Chief Government Whip, Urban Development and Sacred Area Development Minister Dinesh Gunawardena said in Parliament yesterday.
The process of demarcating areas and planning had already commenced in the East and soon this would be commenced in the North. He said the tsunami victims in these two provinces had to live in temporary shelters there as those areas had been under the influence of the LTTE for years.
Answering a question raised by UNP Colombo District MP Ravi Karunanayake, he said that 23,275 persons perished in the tsunami disaster and 193,765 families were displaced. A total number of 119,562 houses had been destroyed, Minister Gunawardena said.
The Government had rebuilt and given 68,814 houses while foreign and local non governmental organisations had rebuilt 43,729 houses.
Since January 1, 2005, Sri Lanka had received US dollar 300.43 millions as loans and another US dollar 706.15 millions as grants making it a total of 1006.58 US $ grant and loan aid for the specific reason of tsunami relief, Minister Gunawardena said.
