Eastern PC Ministers want Governor out
By Kelum Bandara
Several Ministers attached to the Eastern Provincial Council say they cannot work with the present Governor Mohan Wijewickrama and have requested the President in writing to replace him at the earliest.
A Provincial Minister, who wished to remain anonymous, told Daily Mirror yesterday that even though they had collectively written to President Mahinda Rajapaksa several months ago about this matter they were still to receive a favourable response to it. “Today, the Governor has clipped the wings of the Provincial Ministers. Even the recruitment of sanitary labourers to hospitals is being looked into by the Governor, who wishes to get involved in everything,” he said.
He said the Eastern Provincial Council was established as a model to resolve the national question, but power has not been devolved to it properly. What do they expect from us if this is the way they are treating us now? Tamil youths who gave up violence and embraced democracy should be brought into mainstream politics and they should be given an identity to express their thoughts and dreams.
