Leading hoteliers told The Sunday Leader that they were being approached by “associates close to the Rajapaksa brothers” pushing them to purchase large tracts of land at Kuchchaveli in the Trincomalee District. The land is held in the names of companies registered “overnight” they said.

A leading hotelier requesting anonymity told The Sunday Leader that a “bogus businessman” who had received a plot of land in the coastal area of Kuchchaveli had requested him to invest Rs. 5 million to construct a hotel in the area.

He said most of the businessmen who have applied for land in the Kuchchaveli coastal area were either from the Hambantota District or supporters of the Rajapaksa administration.

Collaborating these charges, Eastern Province Chief Minister Sivanesathurai Chandrakanthan said he has objected to a proposed tourism development project in the Kuchchaveli coastal area in the Trincomalee District claiming it did not have the official approval of either the Chief Minister or the Provincial Land Commissioner.

Chandrakanthan told The Sunday Leader that the UDA, Trincomalee GA and the Tourism Ministry had decided the project without receiving the necessary approval from the Chief Minister.

According to the proposal about eight acres of prime land in the Kuchchaveli coastal area are to be distributed among 132 businessmen to develop the area as a tourist destination.

“I objected to it and stopped the project as neither the Provincial Land Commissioner nor I were informed of it. According to the prevailing laws, it is necessary for any project to be launched in the Province to receive necessary approval from the Chief Minister,” Chandrakanthan said.

November 29, 2009 at 8:45 am Aiiyyo…Based on this information, the greed and the shamelessness of the president and his family are disgusting.
President did not want to give a separate state for the Tamils but it is OK for him and his filthy greedy family to sell parts of the country for their greedy and filthy ways.
If this is to contunue, I would rather have given Prabhakaran a separate state, knowing hopefully that the the tamils could get a good or better life than have land claimed/owned illegally by MR and his Hora Morons to then sell and benefit cfrom ill gotten gains. This will have a bad influence as the land owners will want to recover their donations to to MR and will cheat or exploit the system or the govt..Who is the end loser..The common man and masses.
I hope MR and his stooiges become accountable at international commissions/enquiries as it is just not possible for any legal or other body in Sri Lanka to hold enquiries of these Hora Politickas..Might be interesting to see what else they will now want to sell. Anything is possible with these mercenary pakses.

November 29, 2009 at 9:23 am This land grab is nothing surprising. It is also not surprising that the land has been grabbed after by passing the Provincial Council and its Chief Minister. This is also prove, if prove is needed, that these provincial councils, especially the East is a dummy. It is an empty shell. Likewise the Chief Minister is a puppet. Those who think that 13th Amendment plus or minus is the cure for the ethnic conflict should think again. In the meantime News comes that PLOT leader Sdtharthan has decided to support the candidature of Mahinda Rajapakse. This is not surprising since he and his party cadres’ livelihood depends on the largess of of Mahinda Rajapakse. It should be recalled that the vehicle used in the abduction and subsequent murder of Dharmaratnam Sivaram belonged to Sidtharthan. The prime suspect arrested in connection with the murder is his private Secretary. Sidtharthan knows his fate if he tries to cross the line.

November 29, 2009 at 9:11 pmThanga, You are quite right. These tamils who depend on the largesse of MR are the parasites among tamils. Another is Devananda – who reportedly took busloads of IDPs to resettle, but was turned back by the army.He is now trying to enslave the residents of the Islets as earlier, assisted by the navy, for the next election, like when he became MP with a handful of votes in the last parliamentary election..
These vultures dare not land-grab in other provinces but only in the northeast, which is under an undeclared Martial Law – the army controls the everyday life of all tamil residents.Only Tamilnet reports the almost daily disappearances, discovery of dead bodies, arrests and murder of citizens, denial of rights of fishing, farming and education. The army has also reportedly planted hundreds of buddha statues, and are slowly ’sinhalising’ all tamil place names. Those evicted by the “High Security Zones” earlier are not yet resettled in terms of the Supreme Court decision last year. These Zones are unnecessary now that the LTTE is eliminated.
