Nalliah,
In 2009, we proved that ordinary citizens can make a huge difference in solving some of the greatest challenges of our time. I cannot thank you enough. I know many people are unable to financially support our work in this economic climate, but your commitment to my Foundation gives us more strength than you may realize.
Half a million people from diverse backgrounds and countries have stepped forward to join our fights against economic inequality, the growing climate crisis, diseases like AIDS and malaria, and childhood obesity in the United States.
You are part of a powerful global movement of private citizens doing public good.
In December, I had the great pleasure of spending the day with a wonderful woman who supports my Foundation. You may remember that Marcia Shpall, an 81-year-old graduate student from Denver, Colorado, was randomly selected to join me on World AIDS Day in New York. I wanted to share with you a short recap of the day:
I know that you have your own inspiring story, and I feel incredibly fortunate to work with you as we improve lives around the world.
Our efforts are paying off, and they will surely outlast you and me. Here are just a few accomplishments that we'll build on in 2010:
Through the Clinton Global Initiative, we secured over 1,700 Commitments to Action which have positively affected more than 220 million lives, including 83 million who will gain access to quality health care and 30 million children who will gain access to education.
We're assisting the governments of Rwanda and Malawi to strengthen farming, water and sanitation, and health care.
We're assisting 40 of the world's largest cities to take concrete steps in reducing their greenhouse gas emissions, including a landmark waste management project in Delhi.
We're working with more than 7,000 schools and empowering more than 2.2 million young people in the United States to lead healthier lives.
We're helping 2 million people living with HIV/AIDS get the medicines they need to survive.
We're expanding opportunity for domestic businesses and empowering entrepreneurs through mentorship programs.
We're providing resources for more than 1,500 cataract surgeries and more than 1 million nutritious meals for schoolchildren in Latin America.
We celebrated the fifth anniversary of the Clinton Presidential Center, an anchor for the Little Rock community which has been instrumental in bringing more than $2 billion in economic development to the area.
In 2010, backed by your support, we'll continue to work with the utmost urgency to deliver long-lasting solutions and measurable results across the globe.
I feel good about the year ahead and the progress we'll make together. Thank you for your continued dedication to the Clinton Foundation.
Sincerely,
Bill Clinton
