EXCLUSIVE TO SRI LANKA GAURDIAN

"The Election Commissioner was in sorry state having left behind his wife at the Temple Trees and he was also unable to make use of his phone fearing it will be tapped by the state Intelligence Service. His wife remained in the Temple Trees last night (2/2) and the EC was put under considerable pressure to accept the Presidents terms."

(February 03, Colombo, Sri Lanka Guardian) It is now confirmed, the Election Commissioner (EC) Dayananda Dissanayake and his wife were held in captivity at the President’s office Temple Trees to agree to the President’s demand to cover up the heavily debated election fraud that produced the favourable results for President Mahinda Rajapakse.

According to very reliable information from a source close to the President, the Election Commissioner Dayanada Dissanayake and his wife had gone to meet the President on his invitation on Monday (1/2) evening. At the lengthy meeting, Dayananda was asked to withdraw his resignation and to make a public statement that the election was conducted in a free and fair manner without any fraud as claimed by the opposition.

The Election Commissioner would not budge from his stand and the meeting had gone on for six hours involving the President initially and further engagement with some confidants of the President. Unable to reach a favourable agreement, the couple was not allowed to go home. Both of them were made to stay in the Temple Trees that night.

When Dayananda was contacted by the President’s contact in the following morning for a favourable decision, he was not budging from his stand. Later in the evening he was asked to go home leaving behind his wife at the Temple Trees. It is unclear whether he had gone home on his own or the officials dropped him off at his residence.

The Election Commissioner was in sorry state having left behind his wife at the Temple Trees and he was also unable to make use of his phone fearing it will be tapped by the state Intelligence Service. His wife remained in the Temple Trees last night (2/2) and the EC was put under considerable pressure to accept the Presidents terms.

He finally decided to relent today (3/2) and he contacted the President’s office to confirm is agreement to the demands. He was met by the President’s men to execute the agreement.

With the full glare of publicity Dayananda Dissanyake went on to praise the conduct of the Presidential election and also announced that he is withdrawing his resignation.

At the time of filing this report Mrs Dissanayake is still in captivity and it is unclear when she will be released.
