Sri Lanka says Fonseka not removed on “external” influence
By Roel Raymond
The Sri Lankan government insists that General Sarath Fonseka was not removed from his post of Army Commander following “external” influence but purely in accordance to the criteria required by the situation in Sri Lanka at the time.
A report in The Nation published in Pakistan on Monday claimed that General Sarath Fonseka who led troops to victory, defeating the LTTE after decades of war, was replaced on the advice of Indian Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh who had conveyed to Sri Lankan leadership that he had received credible intelligence about the possible coup against the Sri Lankan government.
Speaking to Daily Mirror online Government Defence Spokesman Minister Keheliya Rambukwela however, without directly making references to India, insisted that the Sri Lankan government "had not and would never" be influenced in its decisions by “external forces” and would most definitely never be "forced" to make decisions of importance.
The Nation in Pakistan on Monday quoted well-placed sources in Colombo as saying that after the annihilation of LTTE, on the night of 21/22 May 2009, Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh had called Sri Lankan leadership on the telephone and discussed matters in the contest of intelligence.
It said that the Indian Prime Minister had warned Sri Lanka that intelligence reports indicated that democratic institutions in the island were under threat from the Sri Lanka Army (SLA).
“SLA and General Fonseka have become too powerful. The situation is dangerous as it sometimes happened in Pakistan and Bangladesh, where military got control of democratic institutions” the sources revealed, while quoting the conversation that took place between Indian PM and the Sri Lankan leader.
Above all - the report said - that the Indian Prime Minister had also advised the Sri Lankan political leadership that they must act swiftly and order changes in the senior leadership of the Armed Forces.
'It is quite obvious that India was not happy with Sri Lanka’s unprecedented victory that could lead to peace and domestic stability; thus denying India’s leverage in Sri Lanka’s internal affairs', the Nation reported.
According to the report India was also displeased with Sri Lankan leadership for the killing of large number of Tamils during the war and for not fully implementing the 13th amendment that meant granting of autonomy to Tamils in the North and East. It seemed a well thought-out strategy that was carefully crafted by Indian Intelligence Agency RAW in Colombo and New Delhi to steal away the rejoicings of Sri Lankan nation in the aftermath of a grand victory against LTTE.
Reportedly, during the course of ground operations, General Fonseka had also ignored the President’s concerns on different occasions. The Indians had cashed in on the opportunity and created an unfounded fear within the President who had got scared and made abrupt changes in Army’s leadership, without realising the consequences in the process, the Nation reported.

India never had SL interest at heart - they nurtured the LTTE earlier in the 80's as we were coming up with our Free Trade policy and they thought we will become a Singapore and they will suffer. Then with SAFTA they got all their products into Sri Lanka with No Duty and all other South Asian countries lost out. we hardly export anything there. There is more than probability that this Report is very true.

In past Sri Lankan kings now Sri Lankan politician begging India support. 98% people in Sri lanka are inteligent. But we vote for uneducated persons and they destroy our country. As our foolish politicians India play the real game in Sri Lanka ground. We need to vote SF to prevent that. RAW will created matters like sunday leader.

There is no need for anyone to say this. Obviously when a general wants to take full control of the Army, Navy, Police & Airforce, any simple Simon is deemed to speculate that something is not quite right. Good on you MR for making the right decision.

This is doubtful news item. Whoever says what or for that matter pro government media airs anything to tarnish the image of this war hero, we know whose talents has tangibly contributed to end this bloody war. In this modern war of our time, SF was on the ground having full commanding authority. Every ruling politician and blind followers are slinging mud at this great hero on some of his week point assuming he should be a Mr. perfect.UPFA lead government is in dirty propaganda campaign against SF. By so doing they cover up their utter mismanagement of economy, nepotism on the body of governance, state corruption and failure to restore law and order.

SF resigned himself to get into politics? Then there is no question about removal. If the talk about SF as Army Commander, then he was given bigger position with perview over 3 forces. We find falult with Gotabaya firstly extending SF on his terms 4 times at the expence of other able Army Leaders, secondly appointing him to CDS at the expense of senior Karannagoda, thridly giving him free of cost 90 million land at the expense of tax payers. It is rediculours to keep this man in power when he was working for different hidden agenda for long time. The point is why GoSL kept him for so long?

“The Nation” could well be absolutely correct. India would never want to see “a stable” Sri Lanka. This was evident from all what they did from 1970s up to date. This “hoax” coup could well be the handy work of RAW, which played & continue to play a major role in Sri Lanka’s destiny. Finally, we poor people pay for the sins of India.

This is not the first time that Inia has interfered in our internal affair, even in the earlier occasion like When late Denzil Kobbekaduwa almost caught LTTE leaders, it is India interfered and ask to withdraw the troops. The former Indian High Commssioner Dixit was almost dictating terms.

Yes. We all know very well that GOSL has become the puppet of India and working according to Indian agenda. If we think about past, we should vote for MR. But if we think about future that will be a big mistake voting for MR.

Ranil made the real soup out this coalition: His political life ends with this foolish decision.

It would have been better if the GOSL removed him without insulting a hero in this manner. SF resigned as they were reminding him an old story. That's "PALAYAN NOKIYA PALA BEDANAWA"

This is a very good lessons for goons who are mislead by too many advisors and some countries eying the interest of Sri Lanka. Gen. Fonseka never had even a dream to stand for President elections. However, due to listening to political and family goons, MR opened a way for SF to take to politics. If one thinks well, who is responsible for the present mess up?. If MR was wise, he would have given some responsibilities to SF as CDS as he would have completed his tenure and retired without any problem to MR. If SF was keen in running a military regime, he could have and was capable to when he had the power. Now he has entered politics coming through an election because he respects a public mandate and not military power. Therefore, the public are not fools to believe that SF is going to run a military regime.

All these are games for individual benefit. Pakistan is trying benefit on someone else’s account. This is the clear cut motive of this report.

I personally feel news is absolutely correct. India always played the double game in SL ethnic issue. In real sense they don’t like SL is prospering. Even the SL governments had plenty of past experience with Indian government behavior its wonder why SL politicians does not use their commonsense when dealing with Indian authorities. Any government comes to the power in future should not make close political ,economical or social ties with Indian government because It can make danger situation for SL and try to be maximum away from this culprit nation.

Can this be the truth ? Or else was there a hidden agenda against General Fonseka ?
