Delhi uneasy on Fonseka’s disclosures ?.......JOSEPH UPUL FERNANDO
Following the comments made by General Sarath Fonseka regarding the final days of the war , is New Delhi’s South block uneasy and agitated than the Sri Lanka (SL) Govt. question sources. Gotabaya Rajapaksa , the SL Defense Secretary when delivering a lecture at Ananda College , Colombo stated it was India which helped to end the war enabling SL to avert the International intervention . At the same time ,General Sarath Fonseka said , based on hearsay ,it was Defense secretary Gotabaya Rajapaksa who gave orders to assassinate Tamil Tiger political wing leader Nadesan and the group when they made overtures to surrender following the intervention of Norway. This was however denied by the Defense Secretary later.
It is common knowledge that it was America which was behind the International pressure brought to bear during the tail end of the war adverted to by Gotabaya Rajapaksa . It was America’s objective to bring about a ceasefire during the final phase of the war. When this was unsuccessful, America sought to save the Tamil Tiger political wing leaders as a last ditch effort . America also gave instructions via Norway to the political wing leaders of the Tamil Tigers to come forward with white flags in order to save them. Later , however their dead bodies were shown by the security division. The International Human rights Organization accused that the dead Tamil Tiger leaders were killed by the Security Division when they came to surrender at the behest of America. The security Division of course repudiated these charges. The Tamil Tiger Diaspora charged that America should take full responsibility for these murders. America had no alternative but to remain silent in the face of these charges.
America classified these assassinations of those who came to surrender as war crimes. It sought to bring war crime charges against SL before the United Nations Human rights Commission (UNHRC) when India joined its regional enemy China to ward off these charges . The UNHRC had questioned whether India’s restlessness and uneasiness whenever war crime charges are levelled against SL is because there is a skeleton in the cupboard of the Delhi’s South Block. If that is true , Delhi South block has to become uneasy and worried by the disclosures made by Gen. Sarath Fonseka in regard to the occurrences during the last days of the war.
Delhi South Block’s uneasiness and worry were heightened when Gen . Sarath Fonseka decided to seek candidature for the forthcoming Presidential elections against Mahinda Rajapaksa in much the same way as when war crime charges were levelled against SL. There are reports that when Gen. Sarath Fonseka went to America after meeting US Ambassador in SL , he was to be questioned on war crime charges. It is significant to note that the Indian media began relentlessly criticizing Sarath Fonseka after he returned.. These criticisms turned most vicious after he announced his candidature for the forthcoming Presidential elections. A frontline Indian media went even so far as to give undue prominence and coverage to a news item provided by the SL Govt. that , after Kilinochchi was liberated , Gen. Fonseka was frightened to go to Kilinochchi. India’s monumental fear of General Sarath Fonseka is neither because he is a formidable Army Commander nor for his cordial relations with Pakistan and China, but because he knew the inside out of all the events and occurrences from the beginning of the war to its end including the controversial episodes during the blitzkrieg at the final phase of the war. Besides , he is also fully aware of the New Delhi’s South Block involvements in the war. It is reported , according to Gen. Fonseka’s calculations , the war was to end in the month of August after making allowance for the delays that would result when measures are taken to conclude the war without harming or endangering the lives of the civilians as far as possible. But , because of the intensification of pressure from the Delhi’s South Block during the concluding stages of the war to swiftly finish it, they point out that the SL Govt. had to commit multiple murders on the Tamil Tiger leaders.
Whether Gen . Fonseka at that juncture tried to orchestrate his plans in accordance with America’s advice is obscure. America’s aim was to ward off the dangers besetting the civilian lives. Towards this end , America applied immense pressure on the SL Govt. during the concluding days of the war.
Defense Secretary Gotabaya Rajapaksa when delivering a lecture at Ananda College Colombo said , India was a source of strength helping to circumvent these International pressures brought to bear on SL , and conclude the war. In the final days of the war when the political wing leaders of the Tamil Tigers came to surrender at the intervention of the International community , Defense Secretary Gotabaya gave orders to kill them, according to General Fonseka. Whether Gotabaya acted this way due to the encouragement and ‘strength’ provided by Delhi South Block is the question that has sprung up in the midst of the controversies.
The more General Fonseka speaks the more the Delhi South Block is worried , every utterance adds to their uneasiness and anxiety. Hence, it is no wonder that Delhi South Block is on tenterhooks specially after Gen. Fonseka’s announcement that if he becomes the President he will institute inquiries into the war crimes.
It is America’s intention to know who foiled their attempts to save the political leaders of the Tamil Tigers , and who gave SL, a puny country the courage to act in disregard of the instructions of a World power . It is possible that this incident must have given cause for America to question defense Secretary Gotabaya at the Airport when he went to attend the United Nations sessions , and its attempt to question Gen. Fonseka when he went to America. Delhi South block is jittery over these incidents. This is naturally because they are masquerading as the rescuers of the SL Tamils.
But , if war crime charges are brought against SL and if Delhi South Block is charged as a party to those crimes before the International Courts , the whole of India will be shaken to its foundation. India being the largest Democracy in the world cannot afford to get tainted with such charges. In that event , certainly there is going to be a huge public outcry in India against the Delhi South Block. This can eventuate in the downfall of the Congress Govt. The Tamil Nadu provincial elections are also close at hand.
If the war crime charges get fastened to the Delhi South Block in the middle of the elections , Congress will lose its status and stranglehold in Tamil Nadu. Delhi South Block is therefore saddled with the dire necessity and motive to make Mahinda the victor at the forthcoming Presidential elections , who is capable of sweeping these incidents during the blitzkrieg under the rug permanently.
